Mission

Revolutionize the design sector by re-imagining waste as a valuable resource and championing the use of recycled material in projects we create and are in collaboration with. Through innovative design, responsible sourcing and community engagement, we aim to create a paradigm shift towards sustainable building practices that prioritize environmental conservation, social equity and economic resilience.

Problem

The construction industry generates approximately 8 million tonnes of waste annually in South Africa alone, contributing to environmental degradation, pollution and resource depletion. This unsustainable cycle underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions to repurpose construction waste and promote eco-friendly alternatives.

Solution

Konto Khalo enters this conversation with the solution of using a percentage of this waste in our production. Now this waste becomes our raw materials that will go through the operations process, to transform them into collections and household goods.

Our Journey

1. The Planted Seed

This initial idea was brought to life in 2022. Gaining awareness of the ongoing problem of construction waste made us take the initiative to discover a creative way to reuse this waste.

2. Visioneers

2023, this project broke through onto the global platform and fellowship called BeVisioneers. BeVisioneers, a programme uplifting and guiding youth visionaries who possess an environmental conscious. BeVisioneers has become a proud stakeholder in Konto Khalo, from inviting one of our founders to conferences in Johannesburg and Germany, to financially injecting funds to help us begin production on our first product.

3. Prototype

Our first product is close to release.  We have been spending the last few months forming this first product, which will also be communicated and marketed to our stakeholders and customers, giving them the first evidence of how we'll introduce environmental consciousness in interior goods aswell as functional art.

Our Vision

Sustainable practices

One of our visions is guiding industries such as construction in pioneering sustainable practices that mitigate environmental harm and promotes circular economy principles. A time and place projects prioritize waste reduction, resource efficiency, sustainable building materials and environmental stewardship, leading to healthier ecosystems and thriving communities.
